Since this program first aired in April of this year, China has had many challenges and issues, severe economic problems, youth unemployment at record highs, a troubling estate slump, and the list goes on.
Dr. Bates Gill, newly appointed Executive Director of the Center for China Analysis, Asia Society Policy Institute, and a former Director of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, spoke recently at the China in Transition Conference. The China we will face in five to ten years’ time will be fundamentally shaped by the outcomes of the dramatic political, economic, and social transformations unfolding in that country today. The better we understand these transitions today, the better off we will be in engaging China tomorrow.
Joining hosts Jim Cathcart and Dennis McCuistion are guests well acquainted with the issues China is experiencing:
Dr. Cynthia Watson, Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs, National War College, and
Dan Blumenthal, Author: The China Nightmare, Director of Asian Studies, American Enterprise Institute.
Our experts believe China poses a grave threat to the world order and is determined to unseat the U.S. as a global leader. Yet while it is determined to be bigger and better than its opponents regardless of how this is achieved, from a strictly economic perspective, it’s doubtful it can compete.
China is suffering internally from an aged population, the remnants of the one-child system, and other grave domestic weaknesses.
What is most troubling is the relationship it has, supposedly with Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa to gain energy supplies. And of course, its relationship with Russia.
