John Allison, Chairman of the Executive Advisory Council, of the Cato Institutes’ Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives, immediate past president of the Cato Institute and former CEO of BB&T, joined us a while back to talk about the importance of independent think tanks.

Mr. Allison believes an independent think tank’s role is to create a free and prosperous society. CATO’s mission is based on the principles of individual liberty, free markets, limited government and peace.
He says,
“government should stay out of your pocketbook as well as your bedroom. Government has an important purpose but that’s very limited- to protect individual rights. When government gets too involved, they control, that makes them dangerous”.
During this episode on think tanks, he talks about Cato’s role as a modern day advocate of the principles that made this country great and that we seem to be getting away from: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
