Re-air: Should the Electoral College Be Changed? (2609)Re-air: Should the Electoral College Be Changed? (2609)

Our next presidential election takes place in two months. It promises to be a more contentious one than usual.  And, it’s possible that the candidate with the most popular votes,  will not be pronounced the winner. The president is not directly decided on by voters but by the Electoral College. A candidate needs to gain a majority of the college’s votes to be declared president.

So what exactly is the electoral college? Today, is it the best “process” for electing a President, or is the “college”  out of date?

Co Hosts- Dennis McCuistion & Jim Falk

Joining hosts Dennis McCuistion and Jim Falk to discuss the college’s present pros and cons, is Cal Jillson, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science, Southern Methodist University and the author of American Government.

The conversation focuses on how and why the electoral college was put into place and whether it is still a valid process to use in determining our next president.

The history is ironic. In the constitutional convention of 1777, our founding fathers were concerned about how a president should be elected and whether the common man had the savvy to elect a president.

Cal Jillson, Ph.D.
The question is does the common man and woman have the savvy to do so today?

Join us to review how the college decides on our next president;  and what it means to our democracy.
