The Arab Spring was sparked by the December 17, 2010 self-immolation of Tarek el-Tayeb Mohamed Bouazizi  a young Tunisian fruit seller, as a protest against government corruption. His dramatic statement led to the overthrow of dictator President Ben Ali.

Ambassador H.E. Faycal Gouia

The protests initiated in Tunisia quickly spread to Egypt, Libya, and Syria.

Joining host Dennis McCuistion and Jim Falk are three experts on Tunisia and the Middle East: a scholar, a diplomat and journalist.
William Lawrence, PhD

In October 2019, Tunisia elected a new leader in what by all accounts was a fair and democratic election. Yet today, despite significant achievements, Tunisia’s future remains fragile.

For Libya, Egypt and the other countries discussed, the road to economic and political freedom is much rockier. Whether or not the United States can or should be more involved is worthy of debate; but what is certain is that what happens in this part of the world will continue to impact our economy and our national security.
