Two milligrams (2mg), which is less than five grains of salt, of illicit fentanyl is considered a lethal dose; about what you could put on a tip of a sharp pencil.

In 2021, 107,000 Americans died of drug poisoning and 2/3 of these deaths involved synthetic opioids, usually fentanyl-laced prescription pills. Most health experts believe that these numbers are understated.
Opioid-related deaths involving synthetic opioids like fentanyl have tripled in the last decade and account for 67% of all opioid overdose deaths in the United States.
Fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid drug is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use as an analgesic (pain relief) and anesthetic. It is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin as an analgesic.
