Is China a friend or foe?
In his recent confirmation hearings for Director of the CIA, William Burns said, “The adversarial Chinese leadership poses our biggest political threat.”
There is no doubt that the pandemic has caused our relations with China to plummet and accelerated the competition between us.
They are also the third-largest trading partner the U.S. has and the second-largest economy in the world and the most formidable competition that the U.S. has.
Bringing some new perspectives on this growing concern is David J. Firestein, the inaugural president and CEO of the George H. W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations (Bush China Foundation).
Mr. Firestein is the author or co-author of three books on China. A career U.S. diplomat from 1992 to 2010, he is an expert in China, Russia, public diplomacy, and U.S. politics. In his Foreign Service career, he served at the U.S. embassies in Beijing (5 years). At one time he studied at Peking University and speaks near native-level Chinese
Mr. Firestein joins our hosts Dennis McCuistion and Jim Falk to talk about the many changes he has seen with China and its people. In the ’80s the average citizen did not think their destiny was theirs to control.
Now far more believe their lives are theirs to shape.
Will this impact future U.S. China relations?
