Will Taiwan Remain a Democracy… Independent of Beijing? (2621)Will Taiwan Remain a Democracy… Independent of Beijing? (2621)

Since our recent McCuistion taping on Hong Kong, events in that part of the world have changed. The controversial national security law which gives China jurisdiction beyond its own borders has caused an uproar.

Co host Jim Falk provides some context into the increasingly dangerous situation…

The relations between China and the United States have continued to deteriorate and are almost to a breaking point. The July 22nd order by the US that China close its Consulate General in Houston was a clear warning that business between the two countries would no longer be the same.

Hong Kong and China Flags*

For the last 23 years, China and Hong Kong had the understanding that Hong Kong would have a high degree of autonomy under what was commonly described as “one country, two systems.”

However, on June 30, the Communist Party of China changed the rules by invoking a national security law that immediately reduced political freedoms that had been in place since the handover of Hong Kong by Britain to China in 1997.

Today, the protests continue, and recent steps taken by China, the US, the United Kingdom demonstrate that the Hong Kong we once knew will be forever changed.

Joining hosts Denis McCuistion and Jim Falk to talk about Hong Kong’s past and uncertain future are key experts on this issue:
